                                    BLOG June 2013: Thinking

I have been writing an article about the planning of set-ups for Incognito invisible lingual treatment, to be published in The Journal of Orthodontics this July.

Having gone through the usual thoughts of “Why did I agree to do this? It is completely taking over my life, I was busy enough already before I took this on!” and so on, I went on to have a much more positive thought: What remarkable insights happen when you sit down night after night and think deeply about something that you do every day.

Things become clear when you write about it, read it, edit it, improve it, shorten it, read it again, come back to it the next day, read it again, add to it, remove things from it, write a conclusion of the whole process and read it again before finally deciding it is good enough to push ‘send’.

Spending so much time looking objectively at how I work, I discovered a clarity about how to do things better. We rush around every day, busier and busier, trying to do too much at once and never thinking about one thing for long, always hoping to become better at the most valued skill of the 21st century - multitasking. We seldom stop and contemplate something deeply and explore it critically. Try it, it may surprise you!

Blog, June 2013 - Belonging

I was invited to be a member of the Invisalign Orthodontist’s Advisory Board last year and recently attended the third biennial meeting.

I am struck by a number of things: How lucky I am to have been invited to spend time with such a diverse, interesting and talented group of orthodontists; what an impressive team Align have put together for the management of their UK operation; what exciting developments are in the pipeline for the Invisalign appliance; how human beings respond to sharing experiences with others and how quickly we start to gel when we spend time with the same people, especially if we share an interest, outlook or attitude. How we like to belong!

My new brace

Brace fitting day!
I arrived at Orthodontic Excellence a bit nervous, but felt relaxed after a few minutes in the chilled atmosphere of the waiting lounge.  The nurse called me in, I settled down, and began to watch the television on the ceiling, whilst my orthodontist got started.  It seemed like no time at all and my teeth had been polished, dried, painted with a little brush and the braces put on.  It felt a bit strange, especially having my lips pulled back with the plastic retractors, and I felt a bit of pushing as the brackets were stuck on.  Once the brace was on it felt most peculiar having those brackets in my mouth - I was sure I could never get my mouth closed over them again!!

One day later and my mouth felt achy and strange, but I could close my lips over my teeth quite easily.  I was very aware of my mouth most of the time, and my teeth felt tender.  I was biting very gently on anything!  How long would this last?
One more day and I was getting used to my new teeth.  I thought I would be a bit shy to smile with my braces, and that everyone would stare at me.  Almost disappointing that not one person commented!  Getting used to eating as well.  Decided to write a blog..........
